For several years, Deaconess has awarded grants to United Church of Christ (UCC) congregations in the St. Louis metropolitan area for projects aligned with our vision and mission. In 2014, this grant opportunity shifted to align with the UCC Reading Changes Lives initiative focused on children’s literacy. To create inclusive, healthy communities where all are active and advocate for themselves, a focus on literacy is essential to end the cycle of poverty and to close the school-to-prison pipeline.
The application cycle is now closed.
Maximum Grant: $1,500
Grant Category: Children’s Literacy
Eligibility Criteria: United Church of Christ congregations
of Missouri Mid-South & Illinois South Conferences
within the 8 counties of metropolitan St. Louis area
Deadline: The 2016 grant cycle CLOSED as of August 29, 2016
Awards were announced on International Literacy Day, observed Thursday, September 8, 2016, National Literacy Day.
Grant Selection Principles
Selected grant applications will mobilize UCC congregations to improve childhood literacy in their communities. Competitive applications will 1) focus on children; and 2) have the congregation directly involved in the engagement and active in the community outside of its Christian education efforts for current members.
