Trustees' Biographies
Valerie D. Bell
Ms. Bell is an attorney and a public policy consultant. She is actively involved in efforts to strengthen the St. Louis region, particularly with respect to enhancing educational opportunity, improving race relations and establishing a regional vision. In that connection, Ms. Bell has chosen to devote all of her professional time, on a pro bono basis, to initiatives and organizations that address these and other public policy issues.
Ms. Bell is President of the Board of Trustees of John Burroughs School and Immediate Past President of the board of FOCUS St. Louis. She is on the national board of Parents as Teachers National Center, Inc. and also serves on the boards of the St. Louis Black Leadership Roundtable, the St. Louis Science Center, Grace Hill Settlement House, the St. Louis Public School Foundation, the St. Louis Diversity Awareness Partnership, the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), the St. Louis Community College Foundation, and the St. Louis Forum. In addition, she is a member of the President’s Advisory Cabinet for the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis.
Ms. Bell was Special Counsel and advisor to William Danforth in his role as Settlement Coordinator for the St. Louis school desegregation case and worked closely with him on all legal and public policy matters throughout the three-year negotiation period. At present, she is an appointee to the task force charged with monitoring implementation of the settlement agreement. She has served as Co-Chair of the Regional Governance Policy Group, trustee of Fontbonne University, member of the Civic Progress Dialogue Committee, and Vice-President for Learning at St. Louis 2004. She graduated with the 1997 class of Leadership St. Louis. In July 2001, Ms. Bell was recognized with a Most Valuable Volunteer Award from the St. Louis Business Journal and Mastercard International. In 2003, she was named Woman of Achievement for her work in building diversity in the St. Louis region.
In addition to her community service, Ms. Bell is an active member of several national organizations including the American Bar Association, the Gateway Chapter of the Links, Inc. and the St. Louis Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc.
Ms. Bell is a graduate of Princeton University where she majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and her Master in Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
Cenia D. Bosman
Cenia D. Bosman is Senior Vice President, Administrative Services, for the YMCA of Greater St. Louis. In her role, Ms. Bosman provides leadership for Association Child Care Services, which includes early childhood, school age childcare and day camp. She also provides leadership for Inclusion Services, International Partnerships, Public Policy, Diversity, and United Way Reporting.
Since joining the YMCA in 2003, Ms. Bosman has also served in areas including financial development, community relations, and board development. Prior to joining the YMCA, her professional business experience includes over fifteen years in industrial sales and global business management.
Her volunteer leadership includes service on boards, committees and commissions where focus on women, youth and family development are high priority. Current and prior volunteer roles include CORO Midwestern Center Board (past), Regional Health Commission Advisory Board (current), St. Louis Black Leadership Roundtable Board (past), Vice-Chair of St. Louis City Mayors After School Task Force (past), School Improvement Committee-Pattonville School District (past), and Edward Jones Family YMCA Board (past). In 2008, she was appointed to the Missouri Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (current).
Ms. Bosman holds an MBA from Webster University-St. Louis and a B.S. in Management from Maryville University-St. Louis. She has received certificates of achievement and recognitions for her work throughout her career. Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation, CORO Women In Leadership, and YMCA Senior Director Certification are a few noteworthy achievements.
Dan Coughlin, President, The Coughlin Company, Inc.
Dan Coughlin is a student and teacher of practical processes that improve business performance. His clients include Toyota, Abbott, Marriott, Shell, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, St. Louis Cardinals, Boeing, Prudential, IKON Office Solutions, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Osram Sylvania, Young Presidents Organization, BMC Software, American Bar Association, American Management Association, AT&T, Jiffy Lube Association of Franchisees, and more than 150 other organizations.
He is the author of the book, The Management 500: A High-Octane Formula for BusinessSuccess (2009) which provides business managers with exceptionally practical advice on how to generate three consecutive years of sustainable, profitable growth. He is also the author of the books, ACCELERATE: 20 Practical Lessons to Boost Business Momentum (2007), and Corporate Catalysts: How to Make Your Company More Successful, Whatever Your Title, Income, or Authority (2005), which was translated both for China and India. These books have been used in Executive Education programs at Toyota, Marriott, McDonald's, Boeing, Ronald McDonald House Charities, National Quality Review, and the American Bar Association.
Quoted in USA Today, the New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, The Journal of the American Management Association, and dozens of other publications, Dan Coughlin has written articles that have been published in more than 100 trade association publications, including his monthly article in The Ladders.
Dan resides in St. Louis and is a member of the United Church of Christ.
Simone M. Cummings
Dr. Cummings is a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at the Washington University School of Medicine. She received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Washington University, a master's degree in Health Administration from the Health Administration Program of the Washington University School of Medicine, and a doctorate in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to receiving her doctorate, Dr. Cummings worked for several hospitals including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Children's Hospital, and St. Louis Regional Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C.
Over the past ten years, Dr. Cummings has taught courses primarily in the areas of health care finance, financial accounting, and managerial accounting as well as policy analysis, business plan development, and strategic planning. In addition to teaching, Dr. Cummings also conducts research. She is currently working on two projects: 1) research designed to better understand prescription drug use among older adults and 2) research designed to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs among health care professionals.
Dr. Cummings is a member of the Board of the Missouri Family Health Council and serves on its Finance Committee. She also serves as a Fellow for the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) and sits on its Candidacy Committee.
Tammy A. Craig
Tammy Craig, a native of Collinsville, Illinois, has over 22 years of diversified financial experience. Ms. Craig is a CPA and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Accountancy from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Ms. Craig's community service includes active involvement in her church, St. John Evangelical United Church of Christ, at both the local and conference levels. She has been on the Boards of organizations such at the Collinsville Food Pantry, the Collinsville Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and the St. John's Home & Community Care Board. She has also been an active volunteer for St. John's Community Haven (Adult Day Care), for church as a Sunday school teacher, for elementary schools in the PTA, for the Collinsville Soccer Association as a boys' soccer coach, for several high school booster clubs and for the local school district as a special physical education teacher's assistant.
Throughout her career, Ms. Craig has worked for Peat Marwick & Mitchell, McDonnell Douglas, Lewis Rice & Fingersh, Anders Minkler & Diehl, and FlightSafety Internation in the fields of auditing, taxes, accounting, and planning. Ms. Craig is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Parents as Teachers, an organization she joined in 2007.
Richard E. DeVaughn
Mr. DeVaughn is currently Sector Vice President of Global Engineering at Ingersoll Rand, a climate control technology company. At Ingersoll Rand, Mr. DeVaughn is responsible for more than 700 engineering, product devlopment, and operational excellence personnel worldwide. Some of Mr. DeVaughn's projects include: new product development, R & D, global quality assurance, lean policy development and advance manufacturing. Before coming to Ingersoll Rand, Mr. DeVaughn was a Vice President of Engineering and Technology at The Stanley Works in Connecticut. He has also held positions at Textron Inc and Ford Motor Company. Mr. DeVaughn holds a BSME form Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) and an SM from the Massachusettes Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management. Since 2007, he has served as a member of the Finance Committee for Deaconess Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the International Staple, Nail and Tool Association and as Vice President of the Alumni Board of Directors for Kettering University.
Frank Hamsher, Public Policy and Communications Consultant
Frank Hamsher is a public policy and communications consultant. Most recently, he served as Forest Park President and Executive Director. Previous to taking that post, he served for fifteen years as Senior Vice President and Partner at Fleishman-Hillard. Among his diverse responsibilities at Fleishman-Hillard, Hamsher served as the public issues counsel and project executive for Civic Progress and worked with top business, community and government leaders on major regional issues. Focal issues included reform of city public education; enhancing regional quality of life; business diversity initiatives and regional economic development. A lawyer, Hamsher also co-chaired the Fleishman-Hillard national litigation support practice group for five years. Before joining Fleishman-Hillard, Hamsher was the Counsel to the Mayor and Director of Community Development in St. Louis City.
Frank is deeply involved in community issues and has a broad range of board experience. He currently serves on the boards of Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis, New City School, the United Way of Greater St. Louis and the Danforth Plant Science Center. He has also served on the boards of FOCUS St. Louis and Mentor St. Louis.
Frank is a member of the United Church of Christ. A St. Louis native, Frank and his wife, Peggy Guest live in St. Louis City. In the 1970s, his father served on the Deaconess Hospital board.
Orvin T. Kimbrough
Orvin T. Kimbrough currently serves as Senior Vice President of Major and Planned Gifts with the United Way of Greater St. Louis. In his work he is responsible for relationship management of United Way's top donors. His portfolio includes leading and managing the acquisition of an estimated 30% of the annual campaign. Prior to his employment with the United Way, Kimbrough worked in community development and most recently held the position of Executive Director of two interfaith organizations that draw membership for a number of religions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism in Missouri. Kimbrough is a poet, public speaker and has been a consistent contributor to the St. Louis Post Dispatch and St. Louis American Editorial and Commentary pages. Kimbrough's educational accomplishments include bachelors and masters degrees in social work from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1998 and 2000 respectively, as well as a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2002. In 2006, he completed his Masters of Arts in Theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. He and his wife, Latriece, have two children and live in the City of St. Louis.
Dr. Theresa Mayberry
Dr. Mayberry has extensive executive leadership and consulting knowledge related to the nonprofit, private, charitable, and government sectors. Nationally, more than two hundred organizations have benefited from her assistance and leadership. She is the president of the Network In Human Services, Inc. nationally the firm is involved with improving organizational and executive performance.
Dr. Mayberry earned her undergraduate degree in Social Science at George Williams College, Downers Grove, IL. Her post-graduate work includes a Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology, and a doctorate in Social Work from University of Illinois at Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work.
She has more than 30 years of experience in leading successful programs, transforming organizations, and policy development focused on improved service delivery systems for children, families, and communities. For decades, she has invested in public policy solutions to improve the opportunities for all segments of society, particularly the least served.
Dr. Mayberry’s professional experience includes positions as the President and CEO of Grace Hill Settlement House, St. Louis, MO; Director of Early Care and Education for the Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation in Boston, MA; and Bureau Deputy Director for the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services.
John Moten, Jr.
Mr. Moten is currently Senior Vice President of Operations and Marketing at Laclede Gas Company. He began his career at Laclede Gas Company in 1962 as Assistant Chemist at the company’s Laboratory. At Laclede, Mr. Moten has also served as Chief Chemist, Director of Laboratory Services, Director of Conservation Services, Director of Community Affairs/Conservation and Vice President of Community Relations.
Mr. Moten is very active in the St. Louis community and is currently a member of, or consultant to, the following organizations: Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis Board and Executive Committee, St. Louis Black Leadership Roundtable, Dollar-Help, Inc. and Committee to Keep Missourians Warm. Mr. Moten has previously been a member of or consultant to the following boards or organizations: St. Louis University Board of Trustees, St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners as Secretary, Salvation Army Advisory Board-Second Vice Chair, National Fuel Funds Network, St. Louis 2004 Task Force; Citizens for Modern Transit, Laumeier Sculpture Park, SSM Healthcare and Wayman Community Development Corp. Mr. Moten was a registered lobbyist in the State of Missouri.
Mr. Moten has received numerous awards including: Salute to Excellence 2001 Corporate Executive of the Year; National Fuel Funds Network’s Sister Pat Kelley Lifetime Achievement Award; Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers’ Civic Excellence Award; Human Development Corporation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award; Women’s Political Caucus Good Guy Award; St. Louis American; RCGA Corporate Executive of the Year 2002; and many others.
Mr. Moten graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1962.
Susan Nell Rowe
Ms. Rowe is a Partner with The Stolar Partnership and a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in St. Louis.
Ms. Rowe has a number of professional affiliations, including the American Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Lawyers Association of St. Louis, the Women’s Lawyers Association, as well as others.
Ms. Rowe counts several charitable and civic activities in which she is currently involved. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Legal Services of Eastern Missouri and a member of the Board of Directors of Interfaith Housing Help. She is involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and has held several positions at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Ms. Rowe is the recipient of the St. Louis Daily Record Woman of the year in 2003 and recipient of the Equal Access to Justice Award of the Legal Services of Eastern Missouri in 2004.
Ms. Rowe received her BA, summa cum laude, from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In 1983 she received her Law and Master of Social Work degrees from Washington University. She is licensed to practice law in Missouri and Georgia. She is currently a member of the Executive Committee of The Stolar Partnership.
James (Jim) R. Schnurbusch
Mr. Schnurbusch has worked for more than twenty-five years with companies in a variety of industries, helping them to define and develop differentiated marketing strategies. Mr. Schnurbusch is currently a principal and President/CEO of the Hughes Group in St. Louis, one of the region's leading marketing, advertising, public relations and technology companies. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Webster University in its Media Communications department.
Mr. Schnurbusch is a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Chesterfield and is active in several church and UCC-related activities including serving on the Executive Committee of St. John's Church Council, on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for Neighborhood Houses and serving as a member of the United Church of Christ, St. Louis Association Identity Task Team. Mr. Schnurbusch is also a member of the Marketing Trustees Board for the St. Louis Science Center.
Mr. Schnurbusch earned his B.A. in Speech Communications from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and a M.A. in Speech Communications from the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Steven R. Stout
Steven R. Stout is co-founder and partner of KASS-MSO, Inc., a company that provides administrative support services to medical practices, small businesses and non-profit entities in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. He also is an investor and Board member of Quality Medical Publishing, Inc. (surgical books), StarResource, LLC (home care services), and Timeless Authentic Garments, LLC (clothing retailer).
With more than twenty-five years’ leadership responsibility both inside and outside the health care industry, Steven has operational experience in a broad range of industries. Previously, he served as Board Chair and CEO of the for-profit Deaconess Health System following its sale to Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Steven later became Chief Operating Officer of Tenet’s $1 billion St. Louis market after Tenet’s acquisition of St. Louis University Hospital. Other past assignments include Vice Chair of the St. Louis University Hospital Board of Directors, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Deaconess Incarnate Word Health System, and Vice President for Business Development at Deaconess Hospital. Earlier in his career, Steven worked at USC, a management firm engaged in consulting services purchased by Fortune 500 companies such as Ralston Purina, Chrysler, General Motors and Cessna.
Steven enjoys volunteer work at non-profit organizations that support vulnerable populations, most namely at-risk children and adults with developmental disabilities. He currently is Board Chair for Ready Readers, Inc., and Outgoing Board Chair of Emmaus Homes Inc. Other volunteer activities have included St. Louis Connect Care Board of Directors, St. Louis 2004 Co-Chair, United Church of Christ Health Advisory Council, Deaconess College of Nursing Board of Directors and Parkway United Church of Christ Leadership Council.
He received a Masters in Business Administration from Washington University (St. Louis) and a Bachelor of Science in Communication from St. Louis University. Steven is married to Terri L. (Hill) Stout, and they have two grown children. Mr. and Mrs. Stout reside in St. Louis County and are members of Parkway United Church of Christ in Town and Country, Missouri.
Reverend Ann Asper Wilson
Rev. Wilson is currently Senior Minister of First Congregational Church in Clayton, MO, a position she assumed in January 2006. Previously, Rev. Wilson served as Senior Pastor at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Belleville, IL.
Rev. Wilson’s first call was as pastor of two small churches in southern Illinois, Bethel UCC in Cahokia and Friedens UCC in Caseyville. In 1982, she became the Assistant to the President and later Director of Continuing Education at Eden Seminary. In 1985, she returned to parish ministry as an Interim Minister of the Illinois South Conference of the UCC.
Rev. Wilson has served the United Church of Christ in a variety of ways at the national, regional and local levels. She has served as Worship Leader and Bible Study Leader at two UCC General Synods. Ann has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois South Conference and on the Emmaus Homes Board of Directors. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Eden Theological Seminary.
In the wider community Rev. Wilson is a member of the Board of Directors of Memorial Hospital in Belleville and of the St. Louis Forum. She was a participant in Leadership St. Louis in 1984-85 and on the Board of Directors of Provident Counseling from 1990-1992.
Rev. Wilson graduated from Harvard University in 1969 with a B.A. degree. She earned a Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary in 1974, and in the same year, was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ.
